Case Study: Improving Sleep Through New Product Innovation
V2 Studios
Working with V2 Studios, I was tasked with breaking down potential problem areas with people and their ability to sleep. Then I would use this research to develop products that would solve the problems addressed in my research findings.
Exploring The 24h Cycle
To begin my research, I broke down the 24-hour cycle. I created a map outlining various factors that could happen throughout the entire day and night that could affect someone's ability to sleep properly.

Through various primary and secondary research methods, including one-to-one interviews, site visits, literature review, surveys and more, I concluded the following findings:

Design Research
A dive into the vast market of current solutions to problems surrounding sleep was performed. I then categorised these products into sight, scent/breathing and touch, with extra consideration to mindfulness and circadian cycle, which were outlined in my research.

Synthesis
My research has indicated that what stops us from getting that good night's sleep for the most part seems to be people’s inability to switch off before bed. Furthermore, one of the most important things outlined in my research was sticking to a regulated circadian cycle. When waking up, we tend to want to stay in bed, making us more tired throughout the day creating a knock-on effect that is bad for our next night's sleep.
Personas
5 Personas were created to explore different solutions to problems outlined in my research. Through development, these were narrowed down to two.
Development
Working closely with the client, I developed 2 solutions centred around the personas produced from the findings in my research. An alarm that forces you to get out of bed by walking a set distance. Also, a sound machine that physically produces relaxing sounds.
